Good Custom Framing:
There's more to it than meets the eye.
YOU SEE THAT YOU ARTWORK IS GOING TO LOOK GOOD, BUT IT'S WHAT'S
INSIDE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!
The framing you choose will enhance your artwork, but what makes
it really good is what you CAN'T see. Howard's uses only the finest
supplies to frame your works of art. We use only rag mats, archival
tapes or mountings appropriate to the work, and ultraviolet filtering
glass. If you don't use Howard's for your custom framing needs, be
sure your framer uses these standards and techniques.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Matboard comes in two qualities- Paper mat, which contains
lignin, a substance that will eventually acid-burn you art, and RAG mat. Rag
mat is all that Howard's uses for any custom matting and/or framing. Your
work is protected from the front and the back with RAG MAT.
There are many ways to MOUNT artwork. At a minimum, we
use heat reversible tape, and we may recommend Preservation Hinging,
using corners and supports that do not adhere to the art itself, but hold it
in place. Japanese hinging is the finest, and if your artwork
should have it, it will. Needlework is always and laced or pinned,
so that it could be remove iv necessary without altering the piece in any way. We
never use "sticky board" or staples, as either could damage you
needlework oer time.
An exception to our usual mounting procedures is DRY MOUNTING,
where we permanently adhere you artwork to a flat backing board. We only
do this with artwork that is only of decorative value, as drymounting will greatly
lower the value of any signed, limited edition or original artwork.
Even our GLASS is special! We generally use ultraviolet
filtering glass on all your custom framed artwork. Ultraviolet (UV) light
is strongest form the sun, of course, but there is significant UV light from
fluorescent bulbs, as well. If you artwork is especially precious, consider
hanging in a hallway or other place away from light and humidity, even WITH the
UVF glass.
REMEMBER:
"Quality picture framing will outlast the carpeting and
furniture in your home, as well as all the cars, clothing, sound systems,
televisions and kitchen appliances you ever purchase. It can pass from generation
to generation and still look as good as the day it was done" -Ray Dwyer
